Citrate is used as an anticoagulant and a biological buffer and is often prepared for antigen retrieval of tissue samples. The solution is designed to break protein cross-links, unmasking antigens and epitopes in formalin-fixed and paraffin embedded tissue sections, resulting in enhanced stain intensity of antibodies.
